I think I’ve always had a thing for coat closets. I’m not reeaallly sure why, but I have. Maybe it’s got something to do with how I take quite a bit of pleasure in putting things away.
I mean, think about it! You’ve got this special alcove just to place your coats. When your friends come over, they can place their coats there, too! When there are doors and a rod and coat hangers, it’s practically the wardrobe that’ll transport you magically to Narnia.
For crying out loud. Coat closets are magical places!
I have this tiny little nook leading up to my space. The inhabitant before I lived here had a bookcase occupying that nook. And, it worked. It stored things, it was utilitarian.
I lived with the empty space for a little while. Maybe a couple of weeks or so, until the idea came to me like a revelation. I would transform that nook into a place to hang my coats!

I used my curtains from my last bedroom that did not have a place in my new space. I bought a shower curtain tension rod to size. Lastly, I drove the half hour back up the road to IKEA to purchase an inexpensive yet sturdy garment rack. Oh, and matching hangers for my guests’ coats.
Because matching hangers are happy hangers.
I chose the garment rack because it was 1) easy to assemble, and 2) white, and 3) inexpensive, and 4) has a shelf on the bottom for seasonal footwear.
My old bedside table along with a long mirror on the opposite wall completes the makeshift “foyer” area.
My coats are neatly and nicely hanging on their respective hangers, hats and gloves are easily accessible in the drawers of the nightstand, aaannddd, I can make sure I don’t look ridiculous before I head out to the world.
Also, my lovely curtains add some softness to the landing whilst hiding what’s behind them.
So much winning, friends!
I’ve gotta say, it’s so much fun coming up with creative ways to utilize a space. Being able to make your dreams come true in the process is a super special added bonus.
But, friends, I also have to be honest with you. No one ever hangs their coat up in my coat closet when they come over. Jackets inevitably end up draped over chairs or the railing or hanging on a doorknob. My beautifully matching, white hangers haven’t gotten any action. Go figure!
